Mondays from 6:30-7:20 pm  INTERMEDIATE FLAMENCO (CARACOLES WITH FAN)

The Caracoles is a light-hearted version of the Alegrias and is in the same compas but different key.    It is beautiful done with a fan.     Those who did not make it into the Guajiras class have this new option!

Mondays from 7:35 – 8:25pm CASTANET/SEVILLANAS MIXED LEVEL

This class is for those with beginner knowledge of castanet playing and are currently working on more complicated rhythmical patterns.  The Sevillanas is a traditional dance from Seville.  It is widely performed in most flamenco repertoire so it is a valuable dance to learn for those interested in the art of Spanish dance and flamenco.    Castanets are important as they are the first “prop” you will be adding to your flamenco repertoire and castanet playing is essential for those wishing to improve all area of flamenco dance.      I also cover posture, foot placement, turns and other skills necessary to gain overall control and grace in your dancing.  Please use your own castanets due to health precautions.

Mondays from 8:35-9:25pm INTERMEDIATE FLAMENCO GUAJIRAS

Students in this class have a minimum of 3 yrs. of training.  Guajira is a palo based on the Cuban Punto Guajira Cubana.    Guajiras is a prime example of the “Cantes de Ida y Vuelta”. The flamenco guajira is a genre that brings together a series of songs called Guajiros that are grown in the rural areas of Cuba.  I will be incorporating fan technique into this dance as the Guajiras commonly uses a large abanico (fan). We will be re-working the dance from previous work that was stopped due to the studio closure.  You should have your own fan as I cannot lend them.  Email Valerie to place fan orders in case you don’t have one.

Tuesdays from 6:30-7:20pm HIGH INTERMEDIATE FLAMENCO GARROTIN

Garrotin is influenced by Northern Spain and was adopted by the gitanos in Andalucia.  It is danced in a Cordobes hat.  The verses are light-hearted and the structure is 4/4 time, similar to that of the Tangos but in a major key.  The dance sequences require dexterity as we are using the hat as a prop.  Students must have their own hat and have complete 4 years of training. Feel free to email me if you are not sure what level you should be in.  We will be cointuing from last season’s dance but newcomers with ability are welcome.

Tuesdays from 7:30-8:20pm INTER/ADVANCED CLASSICAL CASTANET

This class will work on a classical piece from popular repertoire of Spanish Dance or folkloric dance.  Students must be proficient at playing castanets but can still be working towards improving all areas of technique. Turn sequences and stylized movements are covered.

BACK IN BUSINESS!

We have had an unbelievable week as we have reopened our Toronto studio and have classes running again after a 6 month hiatus. The studio is has been overhauled as well as our entire building at 100 Symes Rd in the Stockyards and we have expanded the dance floor area for adequate physical distancing as well as limiting the number of student to 4 or 5 per class. It is totally worth it and I am so relieved and happy to see all my great students again!. Since our “in person” classes are full, I am running virtual classes as well and have a new Beginner Flamenco on Zoom starting Thursday, September 10 from 5:30-6:20pm. $12 per single class or 4 classes for $40. Email ritmoflamenco@hotmail.com to reserve your spot!
