No family lives the tradition more fully than the Scannuras.  They are Canada’s pre-eminent flamenco family, pursuing the art form with authenticity and excellence.

Artistic Directors Valerie and Anjelica Scannura are fully-equipped to pass on their passion for dance in group and private lessons held in their Stockyards Studios at historic building 100 Symes Rd.

Ritmo Flamenco have received acclaim for their brand of flamenco that refuses to be formulaic and with their troupe of dancers and musicians they have performed in concerts and festivals world-wide.  Highlights of their tours have been: The Malta International Arts Festival in Valletta, Malta , the Luminato celebrations in the Distillery District, The Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, The Zihuatanejo Guitar Festival in Mexico, The Just Strings Festival in Napa Valley, California. They successfully toured to the Middle East and performed in concert in Amman, Jordan at the Odeon Theatre. The have performed to sold-out theatres at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, Harbourfront Centre, the Pan Am Games Celebration at Harbourfront Centre, the Toronto Botanical Gardens concert series, as well as private performances for celebrities and dignitaries. Roger Scannura was selected to attend private concerts at the Spanish Embassy in Ottawa and we regularly promote Spain by being the featured artists of the Tourist Office of Spain.

The Dance Company’s History since 1996…

The Ritmo Flamenco Dance and Music Ensemble was formed in 1995 by Valerie Scannura (Artistic Director, choreographer) and Roger Scannura (Music Director, flamenco guitarist). Their daughter, Anjelica Scannura is Co-Artistic Director and is an award-winning choreographer and dancer.

Since its inception, they have enthralled audiences in music and dance festivals worldwide. The company strives to create original concepts woven seamlessly into their productions with artists they have mentored, while continually going to the source by travelling to Spain. They have garnered a strong reputation for their authentic brand of flamenco that is bred in the bone, ensuring their presentations are marked with the Scannura’s outstanding level of excellence.

Valerie is a qualified teacher of dance and is a member of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing where she obtained her Associate status as a certified teacher of Cecchetti Ballet while she trained at Canada’s National Ballet School.    She apprenticed,  taught  and performed for both Paula Moreno and Esmeralda Enrique before forming her own dance company in 1996.  She has continued to enrich her teaching by traveling to Spain to study intensely with flamenco’s masters of the art form in several renowned enclaves for flamenco such as:  Madrid, Jerez de la Fonterra, Sevilla and Granada from 1992 to the present.   She has devised her own program that incorporates a progressive curriculum to train Canadian students of all ages and levels.
